Choosing the Right Drapery and Window Treatments

Choosing the Right Drapery and Window Treatments

I believe window treatments are an important element in almost any room.  They are rarely the focal point but they do give a finished feel to the space.  As with all other aspects of good design I take the needs and personal tastes of my clients into account when deciding on what type of treatment will work best for them.  Given their contribution, it is important to select the right style, fabric and hardware for the job.

My all-time favorite type of window treatment is simple drapery panels that hang on either side of the window. Panels do a great job of framing the window, can add height to a room, and are a fairly inexpensive option.  Panels do not have to be elaborate but the selections you make can help them fit into any setting from modern to traditional and everything in between.

In this master bedroom I paired a silky fabric for the panels with a damask swag and tassel fringe to compliment the elegant feel of the room. I used the same damask for roman shades on the room’s French doors. The overall effect is soothing but ties the room’s color palette together.

I had so much fun designing this reading nook for my clients’ young children. I color-blocked the drapes in navy and oatmeal to pull together the patterns and colors of the cushions and pillows. Though the fabrics I selected were simple, the color-blocking made the panels more interesting and gave the space a youthful feel. In this case I made sure the panels could open and close so the kids could create a cozy place to curl up with a good book.

In this formal living room, I again selected solid silks using the blue to band the inside edge and bottom of the panels to bring the room’s color palette together. I chose large wooden drapery rods with carved finials as a way to balance out the mirror over the fireplace and the antique mirrored panels on either side.

In the dining room I used the same style panels so the two areas had a similar feel. Here I added sheers, for privacy first and foremost, but I also loved the way it softened the overall feel of the room. The sheers are a nice backdrop for the crystal chandeliers.

When there are fabulous views outside your windows, I find simple drapery panels are best, allowing the view to be front and center. The panels don’t obscure the view and create a soft frame around the window that allows the outside to become a part of the room.

Draperies, sheers and blinds are all good options for adding the finishing touch in a design plan. Valances are another option especially for windows where drapes do not make sense. In the kitchen shown above I chose a valance for the window over the kitchen sink. The valance softens the area surrounded by darker cabinetry and glass and metal backsplash tile. I chose a natural-colored linen to add some contrast while the decorative band along the bottom ties in the other colors in the room.

With so many options in window treatments I love the challenge of finding just the right combination of style, fabric and decorative elements to give each space the perfect finishing touch. If you need help finding that perfect solution, send me an email or give me a call at (317) 507-9358.
