29 Jul Remodeling Master Bedrooms
My philosophy I use to approach remodeling master bedrooms is that this space is specifically for resting in, so peace and comfort become priorities. The goal driving my design is to create a retreat, a soft comfortable place for the homeowners to enjoy. A master bedroom is a fun place to add in some romance or whimsy, but still my overall intention is to keep it very relaxing and cozy.
A master bedroom design should also meet the specific needs of the homeowners. Every couple has their own mix of habits—whether they are avid readers, TV watchers, night owls or early risers, each activity should be accommodated in the best way possible. Storage is another important element to discuss; do they need multiple dressers, night stands or armoires? What you can include in a design is somewhat dependent on how big the master suite is. It is not always the case that additional seating or a desk will fit, though often my clients love having a place to sit, read or keep up on their personal paperwork. Choosing window coverings will be dependent on sleeping habits. Are windows well shaded or completely exposed to the sun or streetlights? Black outs blinds, or a combination of blinds and drapes must be considered in order to keep the bedroom dark enough to sleep in. Despite all these practical considerations, the master bedroom is a great place to create a mood or ambiance, and the trick is to marry the practical with that calm, relaxing atmosphere that helps you wind down at the end of the day.
In this Zionsville home, the layout made for a self-contained master suite area where the homeowners could really get away from it all. We had a lot of room to work with, and could even include a box fireplace. We turned one corner into a private library and desk space were my clients could enjoy their outdoor view as well.
The darker tones and hardwood floors in the room added to the retreat feel. The bed often works as the focal point in bedrooms, and bedding is where practical really meets aesthetic. You need sheets that are easy to take care of, but the most durable is certainly not always the most pretty, or fits with your design. I often combine ready-made bedding that can be washed in home with custom fabrics in pillows, shams and trims to create a unique bed setting.
In this old-styled farm house, the windows provided my clients with a lot of natural light in their bedroom space, which they wanted to incorporate rather than block out. With a warm floor and darker wooden ceiling beams, we were trying to find a happy medium between dark and light. They also wanted the overall look tailored a little more to the masculine side. We went with light walls and furniture, darker blinds on the windows, and a streamlined bed. The result was a high contrast bedroom that still feels softs and comfy.
The bedding and sheets are ready-made, and the king-size shams, pillows and skirts are custom, giving my clients a lovely one-of-a-kind bed setting. The picture we hung over their bed was one they found on vacation, adding significance to their bedroom as well as interest and color.
Whether you are designing for two or one, master bedrooms are the perfect place for peace and comfort. I love working with my clients to find the right balance of practicality and style that works just for them in these personal spaces.
