16 Dec Stephanie’s Holiday Decorating Obsession
The holiday season is my favorite time of year. I love the lights and family time, and I absolutely love holiday decorating. I’m a homebody at heart, and my bright, twinkling decorations make being home a true joy. My house was built in the 1920s, and its age feeds my decorating style: vintage Christmas. My décor includes a Santa collection. I started collecting Santas about 15 years ago, and love unpacking them every year. They range in size and style; many were gifts from my husband and son. Some are collector items, but most are just unique, fun Santas that spoke to me when I found them.
The holidays are a time to go all out and have fun with your décor. I am a “the-more-the-merrier” decorator, and use a lot of glitter and twinkle lights. My decorations are spread evenly throughout my home to bring the Christmas spirit to every room. I use both colored and white lights, creating a warm glow everywhere you look. I also love to drape garlands adorned with ribbons and sparkling snowflakes.
We have always enjoyed a real tree at Christmas. Finding the right one each year is always part of the fun. On our real tree, I mix together my collection of ornaments: multi-colored, big and small, glass and metal, old and new. We also put up a tree in my son’s room that is filled with his handmade ornaments from years past, ornaments collected on family vacations, and themed ornaments from things he loved as a child, like construction equipment and Scooby Doo characters.
I think one of my favorite Christmas decorations is the hand-painted wooden Santa that hangs over our fireplace, which I decorate with garlands, lights and berries. This Santa painting is the first thing that goes up each year and his warm, whimsical face makes us smile all month long.
The main idea with holiday decorating is to have fun with it! Let your whimsy or creative imagination shine. There are no rules—just follow what suits you and decorate with what you want to be surrounded by in the month of December.
I wish you and your families the best of the season and a very happy new year!
